Do I need a special builder for my SIP home?
When it comes to building your dream home with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), one of the most common questions is: "Do I need a special builder for this?" The short answer is no, but there’s more to it that’s worth exploring.
At Formance, we’ve been leading the charge in New Zealand’s SIP revolution, and we know that choosing the right builder is critical to the success of your project. While we have a trusted network of build partners who are well-versed in SIP construction (see here), we also understand that your preferred builder might not be part of this network or may have little to no experience with SIPs. That’s completely fine.
The beauty of SIP construction lies in its simplicity. SIPs are pre-manufactured, high-performance panels that are easy to work with once the basics are understood. Traditional builders, even those without prior SIP experience, can quickly get up to speed with SIP construction.
However, like any building method, there is always a learning curve. Even seasoned builders will discover new techniques and tricks as they gain experience working with SIPs. These nuances—like the best ways to handle the panels, how to connect to non-SIP elements, or the optimal sealing methods—are often picked up with time and hands-on experience. But don’t let that deter you; the learning curve is manageable, and the results are well worth it.
Our Build Partner Network
While SIP experience isn't essential, we do have a preferred build partner network for a reason. These partners have gone through our training and have hands-on experience with SIP construction. They understand the nuances of SIP builds, from the precise measurements to the optimal installation techniques, and can help ensure that your home is built to the highest standards.
You can check out our build partner network here.
Working with a Formance build partner means you’re getting a team that already knows the ins and outs of SIP construction, which can lead to a smoother build process and fewer surprises along the way. Their experience allows them to navigate that initial learning curve more quickly, bringing the best practices to your project right from the start.
Training for New Builders
If you already have a builder in mind who isn’t part of our network, don’t worry—we’re here to support them. We offer comprehensive training sessions for all new builders interested in working with SIPs. These sessions cover everything they need to know, from the basics of SIP construction to advanced techniques and best practices.
However, it’s important to note that for our CodeMark certification to apply—and for your SIP panels to be signed off on for code compliance—your builder must pass our training course. This ensures that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the stringent standards required for SIP construction. Our training is practical and designed to help your builder gain confidence and competence quickly, so they can tackle your project with expertise. While there’s always a learning curve, our training means that your builder will have all the skills and techniques to bring your home to life.
Building with Confidence
At the end of the day, what matters most is that you feel confident in the team building your home. Whether you choose to work with one of our trusted build partners or your own builder, rest assured that Formance is here to provide the support, resources, and training needed to make your SIP home a success.
Building with SIPs is an exciting journey, and with the right team, it can be a smooth and rewarding experience. If you’re ready to start your SIP project or have more questions about the process, reach out to us. We’re here to help make your dream home a reality—no matter which builder you choose.
